POTENTIAL plans to build a hotel at Bournemouth Airport have been revealed following the multi-million pound development of both terminals and other facilities.

The airport has undergone a major transformation over the past two years, with the departure and arrivals terminal rebuilt and opened, as well as other facilities, including resurfacing the complete length of the runway, doubling the size of the apron and installing new navigation and lighting aids.

The project, which has cost £45million, is due to finish at the end of the summer, on time and on budget.

But now, the development team at Manchester Airports Group, who owns the airport, has turned their attention to developing hotel facilities at the airport over the next 12 months.

MAG Developments said the need for the first “on-site” airport hotel has been brought on by the major transformation Bournemouth has undergone.

A spokesperson for the company said: “With the £45million programme of investment at Bournemouth Airport due to be completed by the end of the summer, MAG Developments is investigating the potential requirement for a new on-site hotel which would address the lack of airport hotel accommodation in the vicinity of the terminal building and cater for the larger numbers of passengers using Bournemouth.

“At this stage we are still investigating whether such a development is viable and to understand the requirement in terms of the number of bedrooms and level of service required in order to both meet market demand and to further enhance the airport facilities.

“Any potential hotel development would be within the boundaries of the existing airport site.”

The spokesperson said MAG would be looking at on-site facilities with “no plans to develop other hotels elsewhere in the town.”
