TALKS are back on to build a much sought-after bridge in Wimborne.

When they were seeking planning permission for a store in town, Waitrose bosses promised to create a link bridge between the old cricket pitch site and Crown Mead.

If the bridge is not in place over the River Allen in three years’ time, the chain will have to pay East Dorset District Council £150,000.

Discussions between Waitrose and the landowner in Crown Mead broke down in February, after he was said to be turning down “substantial and fair” offers for a small patch of ground.

The council had been looking to use its compulsory purchase powers to secure the “important bridge for Wimborne” as soon as possible. But this may now not be necessary.

A Waitrose spokesman said: “We are in discussions with the landlord and remain committed to the delivery of the bridge and making sure we play our part in attracting shoppers to the town centre.”
