DORSET-based commentary legend Dave Lanning has declined an invitation to make a farewell appearance in his home town tonight.

The 888.com Premier League darts arrives in Bournemouth this evening for its popular appearance at the BIC.

Lanning, 73, was offered the opportunity by Sky Sports to call the shots at the event.

But the Lilliput man, a former Daily Echo reporter, is standing by his decision to end a 38-year involvement with the sport.

He said: “I twice previously felt I had achieved all that was possible in darts and that it was time to move over and allow the brilliant younger fellows to take over.

“I was twice talked out of retiring by Sky Sports’ executive darts producer Rory Hopkins and my commentating colleague of 30 years, Sid Waddell.

“Now they have both asked me to make a farewell performance but, after consideration, I really don’t think it would be appropriate, although I am flattered by their persistence.”

Citing reasons for his non-appearance at the BIC, Lanning highlighted his desire to make a clean break and his belief that southern crowds know him better for his speedway links and written work.

However, despite hanging up his microphone, Professional Darts Corporation hall of fame member Lanning does not intend to fade into the background.

The former Poole Grammar School pupil has been in protracted negotiations with two film companies regarding a screenplay. He is also in discussions with publishers about an accompanying 80,000-word novel.
