DORSET-based actor Martin Clunes and his TV producer wife Phillipa Braithwaite have adopted two rescued ponies from the RSPCA.

The animal-loving couple responded to a national appeal to find new homes for 37 horses saved from appalling conditions at a farm near Amersham, Buckinghamshire in January 2008.

More than 1,500 people applied to adopt them, and as a result homes were found for a further 80 other rescued horses and ponies in the charity’s care.

Mr and Mrs Clunes, who have a home in the Beaminster area, have now rehomed mini-Shetland pony Oliver and New Forest pony Connor. Although not part of the Amersham rescue, the young horses had been signed over to the RSPCA during an investigation into their neglect.

Mr Clunes, a patron of Julia’s House children’s hospice at Corfe Mullen, said: “When they first came to us they were quite scared, but it’s been great to see them get their confidence back and to see them progress.

“The bond you get with a horse that lives with you is massive, and it’s been such a joy to have the ponies with us. But taking on a horse is a huge commitment so people need to carefully consider their circumstances before bringing one home.”

Mrs Clunes said: “Rehoming an animal is such a great thing to do. It’s a great feeling to know that you have helped a pony or horse who really needed it.”

The couple, experienced horse owners who work together on ITV’s popular Doc Martin series, had to pass the necessary home checks before taking home the latest additions to their family.

They plan to keep Oliver as a companion for their other Shetlands, while Connor will eventually become a riding pony for their daughter Emily.

RSPCA equine rehoming officer Sally Learoyd said: “The response to the appeal was fantastic. While many of the horses and ponies have now been given a second chance, there are a lot more who still need new owners.”
