ROYAL wedding fever is set to sweep Gillingham on Friday April 29 when the town holds a street party to celebrate the marriage of Prince William to Kate Middleton.

Businesses have put up funding to create an event described by organisers as “a traditional street party” with bunting, outdoor dining, music, and games.

Organiser, Donna Ford, said: “The majority of businesses in Gillingham High Street have pulled together to help raise funds for the event and we have also received support from companies on the trading estates.

“We are so lucky to have such good community spirit in this town. We can’t thank them enough.”

The party will be held between 2pm and 5.30pm and centre around Lloyds Bank. A section of the High Street between Allum and Sidaway Jewellers and the Co-Op will close from 12pm to 7pm.

A hog roast and bar will be laid on and residents are invited to bring picnics. Entertainment and competitions will be held throughout the day.

Gillingham Imperial Silver Band will open the entertainment at 2pm and will be followed by local bands Tanglwould and the Bell Street Jazz Band.

The town’s fire crew and carnival committee will decorate the High Street with bunting and businesses are invited to decorate their windows in a red, white and blue royal theme.
