WEST Cliff residents have voiced their opposition to proposals for cycle lanes in the area.

Members of the West Cliff Green Residents Association were asked for their views so that a suggestion could be put forward to Bournemouth council for cycle lanes on footpaths if it was thought necessary.

But most respondents said they feared such a move would attract more cyclists to the area and would therefore cause danger for pedestrians.

Comments included: “It is my opinion the vast majority of people generally do not want cycling on the footpaths. We can see how dangerous it is on the prom.”

Another respondent said: “People should be able to enjoy the open spaces without fear of getting knocked over.”

A third said: “I risk life and limb running along the prom dodging cyclists going much faster than the limit – my vote is for a cycle-free zone.”

But a supporter of the idea replied: “I don’t see why the majority of sensible cyclists, children learning to ride etc, are penalised because of a few cyclists who have no regard for others.”

Chris Colledge, chairman of the association, said: “Everyone has given careful consideration to this subject and the majority feeling is that the local community is against such an idea.”
