RESIDENTS determined to see a controversial speed limit lowered on a Highcliffe Road will get a second chance at success next month.

The application to lower the speed limit on Lymington Road in Highcliffe was dismissed at Dorset County Council's roads and rights of way committee in January.

Christchurch councillor David Jones, who sits as a county councillor on the committee, defended voting against the measure, saying there was not enough factual evidence to support the change.

But at a meeting of the county council's cabinet recently, the proposal was sent back to the roads committee for reconsideration.

Ward councillor Trish Jamieson told the cabinet meeting she was disappointed by the decision of the previous committee to refuse the reduction.

She believed the committee had not been provided with accurate information regarding the access points onto the road, adding Christchurch Borough Council backed the scheme.

Bob Denney, chairman of the Lymington Road Action Group (LRAG), who is calling for the reduced speed limit said a protest march he was organising has been postponed until a decision had been made.

"We will wait and see what happens. Ultimately this is for the good of people and to protect their safety so I don't understand why it is being blocked", he said.

He claims 98 per cent of people along Lymington Road support the scheme, which have also received the backing of ward councillors.

The report will go to the committee on March 11.
