A PROMISING footballer from Bournemouth has been sacked by his club after being jailed for seven months.

Rico Wilson, a striker with Dorchester Town, appeared at Bournemouth Crown Court on Friday on his 20th birthday to be sentenced for possessing 1.87g of methedrone – a class B drug – and various other charges.

He was sentenced to three months in jail for four offences: • Possessing a class B drug in Long Park Road, Bournemouth, on April 18, when he was searched after being arrested on an unrelated matter.

• Failing to comply with a direction from a police officer who sent him away outside Bournemouth night club Klute last August.

• Failing to turn up at court last September.

• Using threatening words or behaviour in Bournemouth town centre in January, when he was spotted by Bournemouth’s CCTV operators.

He was sentenced to a further four months in prison for breaching a suspended sentence order imposed in August relating to an ABH assault charge in August 2008.

Dorchester Town promptly sacked him but has not ruled out a return to the club on his release.

Dorchester Town chairman Shaun Hearn said: “We certainly don’t condone any behaviour like that and all we can do is terminate his contract, which we have done.

“As a football club we don’t want to be tarnished with anything like that because we are a family club, but on a personal level I have never had any problem with Rico.

“Perhaps as a club we need to do a bit more to find out what is going on in players' lives as we were unaware of what has happened.”

Wilson was due to appear at Bournemouth Magistrates Court today to face further charges for possessing both class A and C drugs on September 23.

Wilson started off playing for Bournemouth Poppies youth team, before moving to Yeovil Town Football Club’s youth team and later joining Dorchester Town Football Club.

He is also played for Poole Town Football Club on loan and Sherborne Town Football Club.

He last played for Dorchester on Tuesday January 25, coming on as a second-half substitute in the 1-0 defeat to Basingstoke Town.

Has scored two goals in 10 appearances for the Magpies this season.
