A MAN arrested following the horror smash that killed a strolling couple at Sandbanks in September has had his bail extended.

The 33-year-old, detained on suspicion of driving offences in the wake of the Banks Road crash, will answer bail again at the start of March.

Alan and Rochelle Bernard, from Moor Park, Middlesex, died in the collision with a silver Mercedes as they walked home to their Sandbanks holiday flat.

Another woman, aged 60, was also injured in the September 11 crash, but survived.

No charges have yet been brought in relation to the incident and Dorset Police said that painstaking investigation work was still being carried out.

A Dorset Police spokesman said: “This is a very serious and complex investigation involving the deaths of two people and a collision scene spread across a large area.”

“Officers from Dorset Police’s traffic unit have pursued detailed lines of enquiry and a file of evidence is currently with the Crown Prosecution Service.

“The victims’ family has been kept up-to-date with the progress of our enquiries and they are supportive of the action taken by investigators.”

Mr Bernard, 53, and his 51-year-old wife were parents to three children – Jamie, Robert and Natasha, aged 17 to 27 – and were members of the Northwood United Synagogue.

Friends described the couple as a healthy, sociable pair with a zest for life.

Mr Bernard was managing director of home extension firm, Plus Rooms, which featured on TV renovation show Room For Improvement.

An inquest concluded the couple died as a result of multiple injuries sustained in the collision.
