“I know what I’m doing – I’ve done it before and I’m going to do it again.”

These are the words of head teacher Roger Allen who has promised parents he will turn things around at Winton Arts and Media College.

Mr Allen, also head of Glenmoor, has seen results at the girls’ school rise by 20 per cent since he took the helm five years ago.

And he has pledged to do the same at Winton, recently placed in special measures after a damning report from government inspectors.

The 850-pupil boys’ school was placed in special measures last month and GCSE results released last week showed just a third of students made the grade at GCSE with five or more passes at A*-C, including English and maths.

“I have put things in place to improve things but it is too early to see the results” said Mr Allen.

“I can’t change the past but I am confident there will be improved results this summer and there will be more improvement as we go on.”

Mr Allen will be assisted in his task by new associate head Joe Burns, who has experience in dealing with failing schools.

The school has a revised senior management team, timetabling has been altered and traditional values will be the backbone of its recovery, added Mr Allen.

He said new, high-quality staff have also been recruited.

A meeting has already been held to explain improvement plans to parents and Mr Allen will hold another meeting after inspectors have visited the school later this term.

He has also recorded a video, outlining his plans for the future.

“I know the Ofsted report wasn’t good but I don’t disagree with a word of it,” said Mr Allen.

“Now I am going to make things better,” he added.
