JINGLE bells, jingle bells, jingle all the way.

That’s the idea of a new crime-busting initiative in Bournemouth, which could see thieves jingling all the way to a prison cell if they try to steal purses and wallets this Christmas.

Police Safer Neighbourhood Officers are giving away little bells which can be attached to purses and wallets to alert owners to thieves.

Officers will be in The Avenue shopping centre from midday until 2pm until Saturday December 18.

Their stall will also offer purse strings, to attach a purse to a handbag and purse alarms.

“This giveaway is all about making people aware of how they can keep their valuables safe when they are shopping” said Police Community Support Officer Dom Smith.

“If it is necessary to carry valuables, they should be kept out of sight, preferably in an inner pocket.

“PIN numbers should also be kept separate from any credit or debit cards.”

Andy Duck of Bournemouth Business Reducing Crime added: “With large crowds and distractions there are unfortunately one or two unsavoury characters who are looking to take advantage and steal other people’s property when they least expect it.

“We are happy to sponsor the jingle bells and purse strings this year to help prevent theft and create awareness of this type of activity, particularly to the elderly and vulnerable in our community.”
