CHRISTMAS and New Year revellers are being urged to stay safe and out of trouble - and Dorset Police have made two animated videos to show them how.

Officers have warned too much alcohol could lead to a person becoming either a victim or a perpetrator of crime.

Now they have joined forces with health staff, community safety officers, council licensing officers and alcohol and drug outreach services to make conditions as safe as possible for partygoers.

Sergeant Anna Harvey, who patrols in Bournemouth town centre, said: “Too often I see people out on the town who are the worse for wear for drink and have then lost their friends or belongings or don’t know how to get home.

“If you are drunk you are more likely to be a victim of crime. You might risk your own safety by becoming separated from friends or trusting a stranger.”

And Inspector Peter Meteau added: “The most unfortunate thing I see is young men, who have never been in trouble before, who have drunk to excess and ended up in a fight.

“Most of the time they can’t remember what they’ve done the night before and when they’re shown the evidence they’re astounded that their behaviour has sunk so low. Drinking too much impairs your judgement – walk away from trouble.”

Representatives of the Dorset Community Partnership will be out and about in licensed premises and on the streets and trading standards officers will check off licences to ensure alcohol is not being sold to under 18s.

“This system of early intervention worked through the summer months and, by repeating it through the Christmas period, we look forward to seeing further reductions in alcohol-induced incidents” said Partnership chairman Cllr Ray Nottage.
