STAY on the right side of the bars. This is the message from Dorset Police as they launch a hard-hitting advertising campaign to remind the public that violent crime and anti-social behaviour will not be tolerated.

The campaign, which is being funded by money seized from criminals under the Proceeds of Crime Act, includes radio commercials, outdoor bus-shelter and giant billboard advertisements. It is part of Operation Protect.

Operation Protect, which was launched on July 24, is focusing on positive and pro-active enforcement as well as increased public patrols.

By using an intelligence-led and targeted approach to dealing with violent crime, the police aim to identify those who believe that violence is justified, especially in situations where there are large crowds of people.

Chief Superintendent Colin Matthews said: "This advertising campaign will ensure that our message is seen and heard repeatedly during the summer because we want people to understand that violent or anti-social behaviour will not be tolerated. Despite a recorded increase in violent crime of just over 10 per cent in 2005/06- which has mainly been for minor assaults or public order offences - overall crime in the county continues to fall and communities in Dorset are safer now than they were 10 years ago.

"We are working hard to reduce violent crime and the number of detections has significantly increased with an additional 1,163 violent crimes detected in 2005/06. This is an improvement of over 20 per cent on 2004/05."

Chief Supt Matthews added: "We want people to enjoy the summer but we will take action against those who spoil it for others by behaving in a violent or anti-social manner."

Operation Protect 2006 will see increased police patrols, more use of CCTV, the use of covert plain clothed police officers, as well as liaison with local councils, town centre managers and licensing officers.
