A FOOTBALLER believes he may have broken a new record for the fastest goal scored by a player whose team didn’t kick off.

Daniel Rose, 31, from Broadhurst Avenue, Bournemouth, was playing for Fiveways United Reserves against AFC Burton at Slades Farm on Sunday when he gave his team the lead after only nine seconds.

“They had kicked off and we won possession. Someone headed the ball back, it bounced once and I lobbed the goalkeeper,” said Daniel.

“It must have been about 40 or 45 yards out. I saw the keeper slightly off his line and thought I’d have a go.”

Daniel believes no other player has scored a faster goal unless their team started with possession and shot straight from the centre spot.

He was playing in only his fourth game for Fiveways reserves. AFC Burton came back to win 2-1.

“I found a Watford player who did it in 17 seconds but as far as I can find my goal is fastest,” said Daniel.

Turkish striker, Hakan Sukur, managed to score after 11 seconds at the 2002 World Cup after a mistake by South Korea following kick-off. Daniel’s goal could be a new record, however.

The fastest ever outright football goal, scored by a team kicking off, was by Saudi Arabian Nawaf Al Abed, who scored after only two seconds by trying his luck straight from the centre circle.

• The fastest-ever football league hat trick was scored by an AFC Bournemouth player. James Hayter bagged three goals for the Cherries in just 140 seconds after coming on as a substitute in 2004.

• Ledley King holds the record for the fastest goalscorer in the Premier League, netting for Tottenham after 10 seconds in 2000.

• England managed to concede against minnows San Marino in just 8.3 seconds in 1993 after a mistake by Stuart Pearce. England won the game 7-1.

• Pat Kruse holds the unfortunate distinction of scoring the fastest-ever own-goal. Kruse managed to put the ball in his own net after only six seconds while playing for Torquay United in 1977.
