A SECOND World War veteran has had his car stolen in what has been branded a “despicable” crime.

The 88-year-old used the vehicle to visit his wife’s grave, go to church and get to the shops, said residents.

The Red Peugeot 205 was taken from near his Bournemouth home on Wednesday night and police are appealing for information.

The man discovered the car missing from Mandale Road, West Howe, the next morning.

A resident said: “They have taken his only means of independence.

“He may lose a large part of his freedom after all he went through for this country.

“He was in the RAF for the whole of the Second World War and travelled to lots of countries including Palestine, Africa, Egypt, Burma, Iraq and Greece. “He was wounded in Greece and still has the shrapnel in his leg which causes him continual pain – which is why he needs his car back.”

Howard Fairman, the Dorset County Manager for the Royal British Legion said: “For somebody of that age, who needs their vehicle to get around, it’s a horrendous thing to happen.

“He fought for our liberty and this is how someone takes advantage of that. It’s despicable.”

Rector Dick Saunders of St Philip’s church, West Howe, said: “He seems to be running around and coping with all the hassle but he did use it get about – it’s a real shame.”

A Dorset Police spokesman said the vehicle was taken from a drive way and that no one had been arrested. He appealed for anyone with information to call them on 01202 222 222 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
