So what was special about six o’clock yesterday morning?

It was the time that Adrian Chiles and Christine Bleakley were once again reunited on TV, fronting their new show, Daybreak, for ITV.

Daybreak replaces ITV’s long-running morning show GMTV and is hosted by the popular duo on weekdays from 6am-8.30am.

Viewers can even watch Adrian and Christine (hired for a reported combined fee of £10 million) in high definition, should they choose.

Adrian, 43, and Christine, 31, were first paired together on the BBC’s The One Show before Chiles quit the BBC to front ITV’s World Cup coverage this summer.

Bleakley soon followed suit and both signed multi-million pound contracts with ITV.

So onto the first show. It began with Chiles saying, “dawn is happening, day is breaking here behind us,” before gesturing at the sunrise behind him. Not exactly going to go down in history but the sunrise was a sight to behold.

The backdrop is impressive, with the spectacular St Paul’'s Cathedral and the London skyline behind their Southbank studio.

Tony Blair was the pair’s first guest, answering questions about his memoirs and his relationship with Gordon Brown.

Some of the old GMTV faces are still present and a few minor stumbles and stutters aside, the first show went without any major hitches.

But what do the all-important viewing public think?

Martin Huntley, 23, nightclub manager from Charminster, said: “I loved it. I’ll be setting my alarm clock for 6am each day from now on.

“Adrian and Christine are the best presenting double act on TV.”

Darren Gilchrist, 42, painter and decorator from Ferndown, said: “All the same GMTV people are still there; Kate Garraway, John Stapleton and Lorraine Kelly, and they have these rubbish features on things from America.

“I’m not sure I’ll be waking up earlier to tune in.”

Mavis Ransford, 63, retired from Southbourne, said: “I saw a bit of it this morning. I do like that Adrian, he is very funny and he has a nice accent. Too many people talk the same on TV these days. He’s a bit different. The show is ok but I don’t think many people really watch morning TV anymore.”

Suzie Davies, 35, retail manager from Christchurch, said: “The set was a bit too dark; but that could have been Christine Bleakley’s tan. On The One Show they used to be on the left-hand side of the screen but now they are on the right – it’s a bit disorientating.

Dean Sharples, 51, bus driver from Boscombe, said: “They’re supposed to be doing something new, but I saw one of their viewer questions today was ‘how many years are there in a century?’ “Even I know that. I thought those sort of obvious questions had been banned?”
