INJURED Jay Herne admits he will be happy to ride for any team after being given the all-clear by doctors to resume his racing career next month.

Buccaneers’ former captain has been sidelined with a broken bone in his back since crashing heavily at Newport in March.

And at one stage it was even feared he might never ride again.

The Aussie ace, replaced by Chris Mills as Bournemouth Castle Cover’s number one, has to wear a back brace for another three-and-a-half weeks.

But then he expects to step up his training and hop back on a bike competitively soon after.

Herne, who was doubling-up with Premier League Somerset when his season was temporarily halted, would be an attractive proposition to boost any ailing third-tier outfit.

The 25-year-old should also be capable of holding down a reserve team slot and maybe even a second string role in the Premier.

Herne, who has seen new Buccaneers skipper Mark Baseby take over his Somerset riding duties, said: “I can’t race straight away.

“But the doctors have said I can do some exercises, like cycle riding and light weight training now, but nothing too extreme for my back.

“The specialist has confirmed I can ride again.

“I’ve been out for eight-and-a-half weeks and I’ve got a different back brace to take that time period up to a total of 12 weeks.

“To be fair, my time on the sidelines has gone quickly and my parents and sister are due over from Australia in three weeks.

“Hopefully a few days after that I can have the brace off, spend some time with them and then do some riding.

“I’ll be happy to ride for anyone. It would be great to be back at Bournemouth or Somerset, but just to have a team spot would be fantastic. It just depends if there is a team place available and if my average fits.”
