THE slam-door trains, a familiar sight on the Brockenhurst to Lymington line for many years, made their final trip on Saturday.

Passengers bid a fond farewell to the trains, the last of their kind in Britain, with commemorative events at Lymington Town and Brockenhurst railway stations.

The Lymington event, entitled All Change, staged by South West Trains and the Community Rail Partnership, featured Morris dancers and music including the band Dorsal Fin.

Lymington Flower Club provided beautiful flower arrangements for the day, which attracted more than 20,000 visitors.

A music event in a marquee provided by Wightlink was staged in the evening.

Rail enthusiast Leo de Rothschild presented an inscribed tankard to stationmaster of Lymington Stations Ian Faletto on behalf of the Friends of the Lymington to Brockenhurst Line.

Robin Craufurd, treasurer, introduced Mr de Rothschild who commented on the hard work that Mr Faletto had put into his work and the care of the station at Lymington Town.

The Friends ran a stall selling refreshments and an information table for rail enthusiasts who had flocked to Lymington.

Georgina Craufurd, secretary, said it had been a success.

“We were helped by a great number of the Friends who volunteered to man the stall and also to South West Trains who helped us all through the planning stage and setting it up.

“I think the volunteers enjoyed the event as much as the public.”
