BUCCANEERS Select guest Kyle Newman was taken to hospital in an ambulance allegedly complaining of neck pains after being involved in a horror spill during their 49-41 triumph at Weymouth tonight.

The Corfe Mullen-based teenager somersaulted over his handlebars and slammed hard into the safety fence, sustaining concussion at the same time.

He had been unable to avoid stricken Wildcats rider Luke Wiltshire, who fell in front of him on the first bend in heat one.

Newman, just back from injury after breaking his thigh in six places in a track spill at Newport late last season, received treatment from paramedics while he lay on the track for 20 minutes.

Buccaneers team managers Garry May and Neil Vatcher were still waiting to hear confirmation from hospital staff at Dorchester about Newman’s injuries when the meeting finished at 9.32pm.

But Weymouth clerk of the course Martyn Hepworth reported he thought Newman had sustained an injury to the top of his neck and had concussion.

Newport’s Newman, who has qualified as second reserve for the World Under-21 Championship semi-final at Landshut, Germany, on June 26, was placed on a spinal board as a precautionary measure and taken to hospital in Dorchester for further treatment.

Wiltshire, fortunately, escaped injury and Buccaneers’ remaining six men just had enough strength in depth to lower Weymouth’s colours by eight points in a third-tier challenge match at the Wessex Stadium.

Isle of Wight’s Brendan Johnson, guesting for Bournemouth Castle Cover, top-scored for the visitors with a scintillating 11-point haul.

He was the only rider to beat Wildcats’ ace Byron Bekker, who starred with a classy 17-point return which included a fantastic third-to-first burst past Karl Mason and Daniel Halsey on the fourth bend in heat 15.

Bekker guests in place of unavailable Chris Mills for Buccaneers at Buxton in the National League on Sunday (3pm).
