HAMMERS and screwdrivers are in evidence alongside rulers and textbooks at two primary schools in Blandford.
Contractor Morgan Ashurst has entered the final phase of construction on the brand new Milldown Primary School, which is set to open its doors in May.
More than 200 children aged between five and 11 are set to move into the “cutting edge” aluminium-roofed building from the school’s existing site on the opposite side of Milldown Road.
Two 6,000-litre rain harvesting tanks will provide water for the school’s toilets, while pellets of recycled wood will be burned in a giant bio-mass boiler to heat the school, said project manager Neil Hatton.
Pupils, staff and army top brass have marked a milestone in the £3.5 million project to extend and improve the school at Blandford Camp.
Dorset County Council, together with Morgan Ashurst, is extending Downlands Primary School, adding four new classrooms for key stage two pupils, and revamping the existing reception area.
Garrison Commander, Brigadier Tim Watts, Dorset County Council's cabinet member for children's services Cllr Toni Coombs, and school improvement chief John England performed the spade-turning ceremony.
Work is due for completion in November.
