ANOTHER night of snowfall caused problems in North and East Dorset when residents awoke yesterday to white pavements and snow on their cars.

A number of vehicles were abandoned on Henbury View Road in Corfe Mullen because of the snow and police advised the highways authority that gritting was required.

In North Dorset, the B3081 Zig Zag Hill at Cann Common near Shaftesbury was closed because of the snow.

At Winterborne Kingston, a Ford Focus left the road at just after 5am and became lodged in a fence, opposite the Margaret Green Foundation Trust animal sanctuary at Lincoln Farm, close to the A31 junction.

The driver, who was from Wareham, was not injured in the incident.

Six millimetres of snow caused slippery side roads in Blandford on Tuesday night, and in other areas it was snowing heavily, but in many roads the snow had turned to slush by the morning.

Heavy snow in Shaftes-bury limited operations from the district council’s waste depot and many North Dorset residents went without bin collections.

But villagers in Okeford Fitzpaine, Winterborne Stickland and Winterborne Whitechurch had their rubbish collected by a crew operating from a satellite depot.

East Dorset District Council said the refuse collection rescheduled from Friday, January 8, collected “about 95 per cent” of bins on Monday – but not on Henbury View Road because it was too slippery.

Their Christmas tree collection has been postponed until Monday, January 18.

Flights to and from Bournemouth Airport remained unaffected by the weather.

At Southampton Airport, flights were temporarily suspended because of snow clearance from the runway yesterday morning.

Dorset County Council’s gritters were due out again at 9pm last night on priority one and two routes, but no treatment was planned for priority three roads.
