A NEW Co-op store is set to move into a failed Poole pub.

The grand building of the old Tatnam Hotel, on Wimborne Road, is poised to be leased to the popular supermarket chain.

Early estimates suggest the store could be open by March.

Builders are already on site, though the two-storey structure’s façade must be largely retained as the building is locally listed.

Businessman Phil Oram, who bought the site from Enterprise Inns when the Tatnam Hotel closed in September, said: “The building is being refurbished to comply with the listed building status and there will be no external alterations.”

Despite rumours of a budget hotel or flats being planned for the site, Mr Oram said Co-op’s was the only “viable” offer he received for the plot.

Though a deal has yet to be finalised, contracts should be signed early in the new year.

No planning permission has been needed to convert the old pub into a supermarket as it is not a classed as a change of use under council guidelines.

Residents have already raised fears over the extra traffic the store is likely to create at a busy crossroads.

A car park will sit at the front of the building, and concerns have been voiced over the “horrendous” dangers that could be posed by cars and delivery lorries pulling out on to Wimborne Road.

Co-op said it was unable to comment on the new development at this stage.

The Tatnam Hotel building, close to Poole Stadium, is one of the town’s most striking landmarks, but has become run down in recent years as the pub’s popularity waned significantly.
