A338 roadworks will switch carriageways on Monday

CONTROVERSIAL work on Bournemouth's A338 spur road is to switch from the southbound carriageway to the northbound carriageway on Monday morning.

The work, to remove wildlife ahead of a major reconstruction project next year, has caused huge delays this week and brought criticism from local traders and motorists.

Work on the northbound stretch of road will continue until the new year, when it will revert back to the southbound carriageway.

BIRDS NOT REPTILES ARE THE REASON FOR WORKS AT THIS TIME OF YEAR!! What the report does not mention is that the capture of all reptiles was completed over 2 weeks ago and will not resume till they come out of hibernation in March/April !! Works going on NOW is the cutting down of trees ready for the works next year!!! This cutting down of trees is linked to the fact that BIRDS are not nesting here at this time of year as they have MIGRATED south for the winter.

Well said thedon, but alas it will not stop those who have moaned, to continue moaning. We have had the southbound closures, where a number moaned about getting into town, now we will have them moaning again because they are late getting home. But then again, I some how think they will find that little bit of leaving early time to get home as usual, the same time they cannot find in the mornings.
.
Good work being done on the A338 by the way.

I wonder how many £100K's this "preparation" work is costing us - we must be the only country in the world to waste money in this way. It would be far more sensible to bung the Dorset Trust for Nature Conservation a £100K or so to compensate for a few squashed lizards - they could buy up some new heathland with this money and save far more wildlife.

Another clever trevor posting that obviously does not have to use this road every day !!

For your information I am leaving home an extra hour early AND still have to queue for over 20 minutes in these completely un-necessary lane closures.

I would like to know if hundreds of yards of bollards will again be deployed on the north bound stretch despite only a small amount of road being worked on ??!!

Did they worry about the lizards when they built the road in the first place?.....Not a jot!

I use the A338 on a daily basis and get up at 5 am - some of us have to work. I have a right to moan about this costly, unnecessary and disruptive work.

Taxpayers money down the drain.

I have to leave work in Ferndown in half an hour and as usual I'll be **cked in every direction to get back to Bmth - Spur road/Matchams, Parley, Airport, New Road - all jammed.
And it'll worse when the roadworks begin in the new year.
That's my moan. And yes I do feel better for having it

I didn't realise that politicians and local councillors lived on the verges of the spur road.

For God's sake we have work to go to and jobs to do. Please just leave the roads alone for a while. Now I see someone (Gas maybe) is going to start digging up Penn Hill Avenue starting Monday for week. More queues to add to the misery...

and poole-god: What a pair of know alls you think you are. I am far from being an OAP, and I too some mornings sit on the A338 in the same queues, watch and laughing at you guys who sit there shouting at thin air because the traffic is not moving, and there is nothing anyone can do about it.
.
If the under growth was not cut back so as to give clearer and bette views along the road, or if road works were not carried out, the same people would be moaning about the potholes, worn roads, overgrown laybys, etc etc.
.
I think, and I have read many a time on this forum alone, why the bollards are set out as they are. It gives a far better safety zone, and it saves the number of times the bollards have to be reset. I DO know this, as I have worked on highways myself. It was great watching the irate drivers going by......lol lol.....

See, you do know everything. Not sure what I said that is so wrong

I use the road every day twice and have never queued as I travel at a time which is sensible

Reeeespect.

I know of a 3 month hold up, some years ago, while some worms were moved before some houses could be built. The human misery caused by this delay was so frustrating to observe.....4 years later and the worms returned! Leave it all alone and nature will right itself. The misery i hear caused by traffic problems in this area impact on peoples work and family and life. A 7 minute, 2.5 mile journey now takes 15 minutes leaving 35 minutes early on a good day. 35 minutes lost to a family every morning and they are all up at 6am. The people who plan these roads/works need to be made to completely rethink how they do it. Its not just about getting the work done, it HOW to do it.

Napalm is the answer.

Close the road for a couple of hours - apply liberally and hey presto you have cleared the undergrowth and trees instantly.

And when the road opens why not sell barbequed morsels from the layby?

Simples :)

Do you really need to drive 2.5miles, especially as it now takes you 15 mins? It'd be quicker to walk/cycle.
