PLANS for a 60-bed residential care home on the old BAE Systems site in Christchurch have been rejected by the borough council over concerns about the economic future of the site.
The application for the site in Grange Road, west Highcliffe was opposed by local residents and other consulted parties over the suitability of the plan on that particular site.
The economic development officer at Christchurch Borough Council said he was unable to support the application due to the availability of other sites in the borough, which could meet the needs of any other businesses wishing to expand.
Letters of objection focused upon issues, which included preferring to see the site developed for industry as well as concerns about how the highway arrangements would conflict with access to residential properties.
Officers, who had recommended councillors refuse the plans, said that although the development would provide 50 jobs in the short-term it would seriously conflict with the long-term aims of a number of council policies. Councillors agreed with the refusal.
