BOURNEMOUTH skipper Jay Herne made Wimborne Road history as he led his Buccaneers to National League Knockout Cup glory against Buxton last night.

Garry May’s men lifted their first ever team trophy after completing a 105-83 aggregate triumph with a 57-39 second-leg victory over the Hitmen.

But the night belonged to Australian ace Herne, who recorded a record-breaking 36th straight race unbeaten by an opponent around the Poole shale.

The former Weymouth man passed Tony Lewis’ old mark, which dates back to 1961, with his triumph over National League Riders champion Craig Cook in heat 13.

He was unable to extend it to 37 as the Buxton number one defeated him convincingly in the nominated race.

But having gone into the meeting, knowing he had to be undefeated in his opening four rides, Herne breathed a massive sigh of relief to write his name into Poole Speedway folklore.

The Buccaneers top gun said: “It was a very nerve-racking meeting for me as I had to get those four races and win the Knockout Cup.

“We chose gates two and four in heat 15 and it was the wrong choice. One and three would have been a bit better and it was the first time I’d had gate four all night.

“But if you’re going to lose the run to anyone, Craig Cook isn’t too bad.”

Herne looked to be cruising to the record as he walked his opening three outings.

He was aided by Cook being handicapped 15 metres in his opening ride after the Cumbrian failed to turn his fuel on.

But the Birmingham doubling-up star’s night threatened to come crashing down when he was held up by a slightly sluggish Jerran Hart in heat 13.

While a second behind his partner would have been enough to seal win number 36, Cook was determined to spoil Herne’s night and took to the boards with a vengeance.

The Aussie knew unless he passed Hart, his place in the history books was under serious threat.

Herne, who is not known for his overtaking prowess, rocketed beautifully around Hart and with fresh air ahead of him, Cook’s hopes of reining him in vanished with every turn of the wheel.

“I knew I had to win that race or get behind Jerran and when I got stuck behind him, I knew I had to go for the outside,” he said.

“I couldn’t really team ride I was that nervous – I just wanted to get my head down and go. I knew how fast Craig Cook was.”

Despite Britain’s newest team’s cup success, the night was tinged with some sadness as just 450 people took to the Wimborne Road terraces.

With Ford considering Buccaneers’ future for 2010, this will have done little to convince him to keep his second side running.

So Herne is calling on the Poole public to get behind the club in the National League Play-Off Final, Second Leg against Plymouth on Wednesday, October 28.

He said: “If we lost a club like Bournemouth, it would be a massive loss to British speedway.

“If we finished top of the league and didn’t run the next year, it would be very disappointing.

“Poole ran on Wednesday night and it’s obviously hard for people to come down and watch two nights in a row.

“But hopefully we’ll have a good crowd for the final because Poole haven’t got any meetings left.”
