THIS is the moment an impatient woman risked a child’s life by ignoring a flashing red light at Wareham station and crossing the line seconds before a train passed.

It forms part of a campaign to halt potentially deadly misuse of level crossings has named and shamed Wareham as among the worst examples.

The pedestrian level crossing is in the top three most misused in the south west region, with nine near-misses recorded so far this year.

According to rail chiefs this ‘widespread abuse’ has become so bad that the crossing is now in line for closure and is being manned by British Transport Police seven days a week to prevent further problems.

It comes as Network Rail hammers home the message nationally with its Don’t Run the Risk campaign, which will feature in television and radio adverts throughout this month.

It has revealed that more than 2,000 pedestrians and motorists are reported to have misused a crossing every year and the number of people killed on level crossings has risen steadily since 2003.
