A carnival procession will wind its way through the streets of Gillingham on Saturday evening.

The Grand Illuminated Procession will set off from New Road at 7.15pm before making its way along the High Street into Queen Street.

Entrants from the prestigious Wessex Grand Prix Circuit will be among those taking part in the procession, which follows a parade of bands at 6.45pm, including musicians from Shaftesbury and Gillingham.

Carnival chairman, George Lambert, said floats improved every year, while procession secretary, Ron Cake, added that 47 entries had been recorded for this year’s illuminated parade.

“Royalty” for the procession will include local girls, Francesca Melvin, 15, the carnival queen, and carnival princess, 12-year-old Sophie Hoskins.

Floats for a children’s parade gather at Gillingham Primary School at 1.45pm before setting off on their journey along the High Street at 3pm.

The processions will cap more than a week of carnival celebrations, with a fun fair and duck race among the fun attractions scheduled for the build-up to the parades.
