A PUBLIC servant in Gillingham has celebrated 20 years in the job.

Town Clerk, Sylvia Dobie, joined Gillingham Town Council in 1989 and has guided 13 mayors over the last two decades.

“It has been a privilege to have worked alongside the members and staff of the town council,” said Sylvia, who has seen Gillingham’s population almost double to just under 12,000 during her time with the authority.

After 15 years as assistant town clerk, Sylvia was promoted to Town Clerk in 2004, and gained a certificate in Local Council Administration last year.

Councillors called on her guidance to prepare GTC’s support for the Three Rivers Partnership in a £6 million project to refurbish the town’s leisure centre.

Sylvia is now preparing the council’s application for Quality Status, which sets a benchmark for the standards of parish and town councils.
