NOT even born in the 1980s, teenage MC Shortie has rallied all his parents’ proto-hip hop records, checked out the Grandmaster Flash dalliances of The Clash and Blondie and served up a lively, bouncy, fresh-faced update of the oldest of old school sounds. There’s an Adam Ant homage, a hint of Rapper’s Delight and enough vintage keyboards, samplers and effects to send a sound library curator scurrying for his white gloves.

Nothing to be Scared of (Prince Charming) sounds like a monster summer hit, while Rope Chain will speak to ageing b-boys and fly girls as well as the new crew. Dance Like a White Boy is bound to cause a roadblock at the school disco and although Groupie Love isn’t exactly the most sophisticated paean to easy sex, it’s no worse than a thousand hard rock cuts.
