NOW, this is how you do a catalogue job on an artist.
It’s a completist’s dream as the first four albums by Motown’s first girl group are rounded up with a live album and the stereo Greatest Hits set, plus every stray b-side, rare cut and a host of alternative versions.
Of the hits, Too Many Fish in the Sea, Don’t Mess With Bill, Danger: Heartbreak Dead Ahead and I’ll Keep on Holding on are stone soul classics, but listen up for their earliest, Spector-like recordings as The Darnells (lush) and the sought-after rarity, I Should Have Known Better (gutsy) and you’ll find there’s much more to the Marvelettes than Please Mr Postman.
Can’t wait for some of their grittier material (Destination Anywhere) to surface – presumably on Vol 2.
