CLIVE Barker, adapting his own novel for his directorial debut, delivers an original (at the time) tale of puzzles and perviness.

Frank Cotton, a rather dark soul in pursuit of the ultimate pleasure, solves the Lament Configuration puzzle box, summoning the Cenobites.

These sadistic dark angels proceed to show Frank the business end of many hooks and chains, tearing his soul apart.

Led by Pinhead, the Cenobites, sporting a nifty line in Goth chic and body piercing, deliver plenty of gruesome moments and, thanks to high definition, every splash of claret and skinned body is squishily clear.

A landmark in horror films, and one no self-respecting gorehound should be without.
