PUBS, car parks and a town centre supermarket are among the potential sites listed for possible housing development in the next 15 years.

Bournemouth planners have drawn up a list of the potential development sites that could help them provide the new homes needed for the future.

Currently, the town is required to provide land to accommodate 14,600 new homes between now and 2026.

And in Bournemouth, where there are very few spare pieces of land, this is a particular challenge.

An assessment of the town has identified sites where 3,891 homes can be accommodated and either have planning permission or are already being built.

A separate list of sites that do not have planning permission but could potentially accommodate 1,404 more homes has also been drawn up.

This second list includes several car parks, including Hawkwood Road, Durley Road, West Hill Road, Cotlands Road, Madeira Road, Richmond Hill and Glen Fern Road.

The Bear Cross Pub, Southbourne Cliffs and the Cranleigh Pubs are also on the list, although this would depend on whether the landowner was willing to sell.

Open space at Bradpole Road, Strouden Park could possibly provide 81 new homes, while part of Kingsleigh playing fields could accommodate a further 25.

The relocation of allotments at Cranleigh Road onto an existing playground could provide space for 18 dwellings.

And the Asda supermarket at St Pauls is also on the list as the potential home for 177 new dwellings, if the owner ever decided to sell.

Cllr Robert Lawton, cabinet member for environment and transport, said that just because sites had been assessed as suitable, there was no guarantee they would be awarded planning permission.

“All applications for future residential development will be subject to planning permission, it must be in keeping with the area and that the housing provided meets the needs of local residents,” he said.
