A RESIDENT who lives on a busy narrow road says it is just a matter of time until someone is killed there due to speeding drivers.

Gordon Pierce, who lives along Burley Road, just past The Lamb Inn at Winkton has already expressed severe concerns about speeds along the country road.

But despite reassurances from Burton Parish Council, the local police and Christchurch Borough Council, Mr Pierce insists that the measures currently in place to reduce speeds are not enough.

“It’s all very well the council putting up new signage, which we do appreciate.

“But speeds along this road get up to 60mph or even 70mph sometimes and it’s so dangerous,” he said.

“I believe that because we are out in the sticks, we are just being left out on a limb.

“We need either a chicane along here or speed-devices like they have outside schools.”

Bob Baker, transportation and highways manager at Christchurch council, said: “We carried out a speed survey on Burley Road just south of the point where the 30mph speed limit starts, coming from Bransgore, and found that the mean speed was 36mph.

“Following this we have painted 30mph roundels on the road and reinforced the 30mph entry signage with yellow backing boards to make sure people were aware of the speed limit.”

Mr Baker added that while it would not be appropriate to put in chicanes or other physical features, the council have been in contact with the police to consider speed enforcement in light of the recently collected speed data.

A spokesperson from Dorset Safety Camera Partnership said that while it had been to the site three times with its mobile camera team and would continue to monitor the situation, it was not considered a priority site.
