SUNSHINE or no, it’s on with the show. Good old variety style – sequin showgirl glamour, evergreen songs and music hall humour from a true vaudeville trouper, Syd Little – gave much welcome warming cheer. Syd might be best known as the straight man to Eddie Large, who retired through ill health 10 years ago, but proves well able to get the laughs on his own, acquired from over 40 years’ working the boards, and over 30 years of marriage – to a very tolerant wife, clearly.

And he gets to knock out a few numbers on the guitar too, with an authentic washboard accompaniment skiffle tribute to Lonnie Donegan, and rocks back the clock to Buddy Holly and Co with the Teddy Boy and Bobby-sox song and dance team. There are equally eye-catching outfits for the visits to Mexico, New York’s Broadway, and Las Vegas. And there’s a touch of real magic from the illusionist making attractive young lady assistants disappear and reappear on stage – while a reluctant hypnotised Syd resurfaces halfway up the aisle. A sure seaside treat whatever the weather.
