THE Bournemouth International Centre has switched off its heating and hot water system for the first time in its 25- year history, in anticipation of the predicted scorching summer.

They were able to do this after extensive work was carried out over the winter period, including the provision of direct fire water heaters that run independently of the gas heating system.

Martin Belbin, head of building and technical services at the BIC and Pavilion said their Green Team, who work to improve energy efficiencies at their venues, had worked together to turn energy saving plans into reality.

“This project is exciting as it’s a first for us and we are aware that we have a responsibility to make both our venue and every event hosted here as ‘green’ as possible.”

It is anticipated they will make significant energy savings.

Test days in the lead up to the final switch off on May 7 indicated that 3000 Kw or 500 kg of carbon dioxide are saved per day.

They hope the system can remain switched off for five months, saving approximately 75,000 kg of carbon dioxide emissions.

Mr Belbin added: “Whilst there are environmental implications of hosting big events, they are a great boost to the local economy.

“Buildings alone are responsible for almost 50 per cent of the UK's energy consumption and carbon emission – a higher percentage than road or air traffic – so it is vital that we are proactive in implementing projects to reduce our impact.”

During the 2008 to 2009 financial year, the BIC reduced electricity usage by 13 per cent and they are looking to reduce their energy consumption.
