Superbly compiled to accompany the film adaptation of Kevin Sampson’s novel, this soundtrack album captures the sound of the north reasserting itself as punk’s largely London-based hegemony lost its grip.
The story follows a group of sharp-dressed casuals in Liverpool in 1979. The soundtrack is culled from nights at Eric’s, which was to Liverpool what the Hacienda became to Manchester, and features a host of post-punk gems including Magazine’s landmark The Light Pours Out of Me, Wire’s I Am the Fly and Young Savage by the original Ultravox! line-up.
Dave Hughes’ original score suits the mood well, as do other cuts like the Bunnymen’s Going Up and the Teardrops’ Sleeping Gas, which have clearly been mined by the likes of Editors and Glasvegas.
