Great demand for Boscombe ‘surf pods’

THE credit crunch and falling property prices are failing to dampen the enthusiasm for Boscombe seafront’s new super beach huts.

About 400 prospective buyers have registered an interest in snapping up the 58 surf pods currently being marketed for up to £90,000.

Reputed to be the world’s best beach huts, they were designed by award-winning Wayne and Geraldine Hemingway and are all fitted with mains electricity.

With French doors, balconies and bespoke seaside furniture, the pods bear little resemblance to the traditional huts which have graced the promenade for more than half a century.

A Bournemouth Tourism spokesman said: “Despite the current economic climate the interest in the surf pods has been phenomenal.

“The prices vary depending on whether they are single sized, double or on corner plots.

“It’s not just the sea view they offer; they’ve got so many other attractions on their doorstep like Boscombe Gardens and the soon to be completed surf reef.”

Boscombe West councillor Chris Wakefield told the Daily Echo: “Despite several setbacks, there is now huge hype surrounding the whole Overstrand project.”

He is confident that the long-awaited reef will be completed by September.

He added: “Workers are back on site; building an underwater project isn’t an easy process and I’d rather they got it right.”

Boscombe Traders’ Association chairman Steve Kent, who is now permanently based at the recently opened Boscombe resource centre in Roumelia Lane, said: “Traders have been understandably frustrated by all the delays; the reef saga has been going on for ten years.

“By the time it is up and running Boscombe will have a new look with special lighting to colour wash our most historic buildings and zoned shopping areas.

“It is a very exciting time; unlike other areas of Bournemouth our footfall figures are up on last year.”

  • A new website detailing the many attractions of Boscombe will be unveiled later this month and on May 2 a loyalty card scheme will be launched by traders.

I'd like to see more information on which ones are for sale together with some prices - but where can I find this information?

And what are the chances of the end product living up to all this "huge hype"?
With the current mind-numbingly incompetent Council behind it, I'd say not very promising, not very promising at all...

I find it hard to believe their spin and PR which is very sad.

If The Council spent as much time actually doing what people want rather than telling them what they believe they want to hear, then perhaps they would actually represent and be of use to the town rather than wound up with their own self image and self interest.

Why should we pay for PR campigns that tell us how well they are doing? when in reality if they were doing everything so well they wouldn't need to spin these types of yarns in the hope we swallow them.

If I had £90,000 to spend I can think of better places to be than grotty Boscombe.

My dictionary defines hype as :a drug addict: something which stimulates artificially: a sales gimmick, etc.:a publicity stunt: the person or thing promoted by such a stunt: a deception.

Council Taxpayers, 'you pays your money, so take your choice.'
Councillor Wakefield, congratulations on being so economic with the truth!

What happened to the the original statement that these huts were to be rented " "42 super clalets available for day hire or lease ". Allowing surfy dudes to spent the day at the cool surf reef. Surely the huts aren't part of the scam to flog off part of Boscombe to make a few bucks as well are they ?

" He is confident that the long-awaited reef will be completed by September. "

Five months in the spring and summer whereas last year they were telling us that it would be completed in two months of the autumn.

So did last years work NOT partly complete this work ?

Are the New Zealand workers (ASR)back from India ?

Nevermind a year ago (May 2008) our glorious leader was informing us -

Leader of Bournemouth Borough Council, Councillor Stephen MacLoughlin, said:
"The public can be assured that the reef will definitely be completed at the latest by the end of this year."

Sounds like Council spin in pure desperation on another failure.

Who are the 400 plus people queuing to buy. The ex boss or RBS, MPs looking for a 2nd home more than 2 miles from London.

£90,000 in this financial climate, they have to be rich. If they are being sold will they require HIPs. They are livable are they not.

This is all hype to keep the residents of the towns on track towards this scheme. Too late Bournemouth and Boscombe. £3.8m for to sand filled canvas duvet covers on the sea bed. £9m for some flats and Surf Pods.

58 Pods @ £90000, that is a return of £4.9m. Not much on £12.1m is it.
