Meyrick Park in Bournemouth has a rich history dating back to the Domesday Book of 1086, where it was mentioned as part of a vast heathland area.
Over the centuries, the land has had various names and purposes, serving as common ground for grazing livestock, collecting resources, and even a plantation.
In 1894, Meyrick Park became the first municipal park in Bournemouth, boasting amenities like a bowling green, playing fields, and most notably, an 18-hole golf course – the first municipally owned one in the country.
The park's transformation into a public space was a pivotal moment in Bournemouth's development, and Meyrick Park continues to be a beloved green lung for the town today.
