A FLOOD alert has been issued for Christchurch and Ringwood.

The Environment Agency has warned of high river levels for Lower Avon and tributaries.

A map of the affected area on the Environment Agency website includes the Avon Causeway along with parts of Burton, Sopley and Winkton.

A flood alert means flooding is possible with people urged to be prepared.

An Environment Agency spokesperson said: “River levels are high but steady on the Middle and Lower Hampshire Avon.

“No further property flooding is expected. The outlook is for unsettled weather over the weekend and further showers are forecast.

“River levels remain high but steady at the Ringwood Old Cottage gauge. We will continue to monitor the forecast and re-issue this alert if necessary.

“Avoid using low lying footpaths and any bridges near local watercourses and do not attempt to walk or drive through flood water.

“Plan driving routes to avoid low lying roads near rivers, which may be flooded.”

The flood alert will be in force until the afternoon of Monday, March 4.
