STRONG winds are set to batter Dorset, the Met Office has warned.

The Met Office has said there is a “small chance” the winds could cause injuries and even danger to life.

Gusts of around 50mph could occur with winds of up to 70mph possible in some places.

A yellow weather alert has been issued for Bournemouth, Christchurch, Poole and the rest of the county.

The warning will be in force between 8am and 6pm on Thursday, February 22.

A Met Office spokesperson said: “A band of heavy, squally rain in expected to move eastwards across England on Thursday with gusts of around 50 mph in a few places very briefly, as well as some hail and thunder.

“However, there is a small chance of a broader swathe of very strong winds affecting southern and eastern England with gusts of 60 to 70 mph, mostly likely close to English Channel and southern North Sea coasts.”

In terms of what to expect, the Met Office said journey times could take longer with cancellations of air and ferry services possible.

Meanwhile, there is a “slight chance” power cuts could occur with potential for mobile phone coverage to be affected.

It said there is a small chance that injuries and danger to life could occur from large waves and beach material.

The latest warning comes as a yellow warning is in force for heavy rain today.

The warning, which came into effect at midnight, is in place until 12pm today.
