A MOTORCYCLIST was airlifted to hospital with serious injuries following a crash. 

A silver 600cc Honda scooter crashed with a grey Ford Focus on the A351 Wareham Road in Holton Heath shortly before 12pm on Tuesday, January 30. 

The scooter rider, a man in his 70s and from Wareham, was rushed to Southampton Hospital with serious injuries, according to police. His family has been made aware. 

Meanwhile, the driver of the Ford, a woman in her 60s also from Wareham, was uninjured. 

Police shut the road for several hours, causing severe congestion in the area as well as westbound on the A35 past Upton. It was reopened at around 6.35pm.

An air ambulance was seen grounded close to the Romany Works Business Park. 

Sergeant Mike Gatfield of the Dorset Police roads policing unit said: “Our investigation to establish the full circumstances of this incident is ongoing and I am keen to hear from any witnesses who have not already spoken to police. 

“I would also urge anyone who was driving in the area and may have captured relevant dashcam footage to please make contact with us. 

“Finally, I would like to thank members of the public for their patience and understanding while the road closures were in place.  

“These were absolutely necessary to allow the emergency services to respond to the incident and for a detailed examination of the scene to be conducted.”

A spokesperson for the South Western Ambulance Service said: “We were called at 11.47am on Tuesday 30 January to a road traffic collision near Holton Heath. 

"We sent an air ambulance, a double-crewed land ambulance and a critical care car and conveyed one patient by air ambulance to Southampton General Hospital.” 

A spokeswoman for Dorset and Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service added: "We received a call from our police colleagues at 12.11pm this afternoon about a road traffic collision on the A351 at Holton Heath. 

"One crew from Poole attended the incident which involved a car and motorcycle – firefighters assisted with casualty care and scene safety. Our stop was in at 12.59pm."
