GUSTS of up to 70mph could be seen across Dorset as the Met Office issues a new weather warning.

From 6am until midnight on Sunday, January 21, a yellow weather warning for strong winds has been put in place which is set to affect most of west Dorset.

A spokesperson for the Met Office said: "A period of strong winds and persistent rainfall is expected across parts of the UK during Sunday.

"Whilst there is still some uncertainty as to the exact locations which will see the strongest winds, northern and western areas are likely to be most at risk.

"Many inland areas are expected to see gusts of 50 - 60 mph during this period.

"Coasts and exposed locations could see gusts of 60 - 70 mph or even higher."

The Met Office is advising people to prepare and protect their property and others from injury.

They say to check for loose items outside the home such as bins, garden furniture, trampolines, tents, sheds and fences and plan how to secure them.

To avoid delays the advise to check road conditions if driving, or to check bus and train timetables, and amend any travel plans if necessary.

In case of a power failure they suggest being prepared in advance by gathering torches and batteries, having a mobile phone power pack and other essential items easy available.

For those living near the coast, they say to stay safer by being aware of large waves as even from the shore breaking waves can sweep people out to sea, and to take care if walking near cliffs.

Weather warnings can change quickly, so when a weather warning is issued, the Met Office recommends staying up to date with the weather forecast.
