BOSCOMBE Conservative Club could be demolished under new plans for the site.

Developer LJB Estates has lodged a planning application to tear down the historical vacant building in Ashley Road, Bournemouth

Built in 1904 and closed in December 2021, the developers are hoping to replace the club with a new seven-storey apartment complex with two commercial units on the ground floor.

A total of 43 apartments are proposed for the new building, but documents submitted to BCP Council show it will be “car-free”.

This means there will be no car parking spaces but instead room to store 72 bicycles “to encourage future occupants to use more sustainable modes of transport”.

If built, the block would have 25 one-bedroom apartments and 18 two-bedroom apartments.

A planning statement from Ken Parke Planning Consultants, prepared on behalf of the developers, said: “Boscombe, as a historic district centre, is widely acknowledged as having a number of varied architectural styles from different periods, all of which contribute to the character and appearance of the area.

"The proposed development seeks to deliver a high-quality contemporary design which is considered to not only fit in well with the varied styles found in the area but complement and enhance them.

“The site’s gateway location presents a perfect opportunity to showcase a high-quality building that will set the standard for development and redevelopment for years to come.

“As such, a contemporary design approach responds positively to the local context.”

It added Boscombe’s economy would benefit from the proposed apartment block thanks due to new residents.

It said it will “support the retail and leisure economy, providing jobs and employment opportunities both through the construction phase and post-construction, as well as indirect benefits stemming from increased local spending in local shops and businesses”.

The homes would also be thermal, energy and water efficient, according to the documents.

A decision on the application will be made by BCP Council in due course.
