Bournemouth is set to host its first-ever writing festival this weekend.

The Bournemouth Writing Festival is celebrating the art and craft of writing on Friday, 21 April to Sunday, 23 April.

The festival takes place across several venues in the town centre, all within walking distance, including St Peter’s church, the Palace Court Theatre, at the Print Room on Richmond Hill.

The festival aims to build strong connections among writers of all ages, abilities, and backgrounds.

There will be 70 free and ticketed activities and events, from walks to workshops, which willl be led by more than 80 writers and professionals.

Festival co-founder Dominic Wong said: “Several events are already sold out. We’ve got experienced writers and those that support writers to get published to help and guide our local creative scene.

“If you are a complete beginner with a kernel of an idea for a book right through to someone who has already published, the programme is full of inspiration and tips to get writing.”

Key highlights from the festival include yoga for writers on the beach, two literacy walks to locations linked with famous authors, an open mic event on Saturday.

Attendees can also expect to hear from TV and film screenwriters, authors, poets, writing coaches, publishers, and a media lawyer.

Speakers include BAFTA-winning screenwriter John Foster, multi-award-winning book creator Sue Cheung and award-winning poet, Aoife Mannix.

The Bournemouth Writing Festival will feature networking opportunities, panels, and talks on a range of writing-related topics. These include creating credible characters, understanding publishing contracts, writing dialogue, and landing an agent.

Festival co-founder Ildiko SpinFisher added: “We are over the moon with the response we have had from writers and professionals to be involved in our first festival. Thirty per cent of our attendees are from outside of Dorset, including overseas, so we look forward to welcoming writers and authors from near and far.”
