"IT WAS one of the best experiences I have ever had."

Daily Echo feature writer Maria Court took on a survival challenge - and this year YOU can accept one too.

She spent five days on Green Island in Poole on a Castaway-style survival challenge for charity.

"I think every single person would benefit from doing it," said Maria, who took part in 2003.

This year's event will be on land near deepest darkest Wareham.

The Daily Echo is inviting one reader to take part and be our "roving reporter", updating us on your progress.

Maria urged people to take part despite the hardships.

In 2003 Maria and her fellow contestants had to shower with cold water and eat pigeons and deer.

They made their own shelters and collected firewood.

They bonded very quickly and Maria said she made friends for life.

"It really makes you put life into perspective. It made me realise how few things I need.

"When I got home I cleared out all my wardrobe. The only things I missed while I was there were friends and family."

Maria found adjusting to civilisation again harder than it had been adjusting to survival mode.

"All the food tasted so sugary and synthetic. We were driving past a house and there was a load of wood in the garden and I thought: Firewood! I've got to get it!"

  • This year's challenge, in aid of Oakhaven Hospice and The Anthony Nolan Trust, is from Wednesday, July 2, to Sunday July 6. Contestants need to raise £750 sponsorship.
