ROADWORKS on the main road of an East Dorset village will last until June.

Temporary traffic lights will remain on the main artery of Colehill until the end of May as engineers install improvements to the local gas supply.

A spokesman for Scottish and Southern Energy said the firm was investing £80,000 on a new main at Middlehill Road.

A County Hall project to introduce traffic calming measures on the road is also planned. Parish councillors recently looked over plans for the speed reduction measures, which will not need planning permission and can begin at any time.

The glut of roadworks may have come at a bad time for Colehill residents and people in neighbouring villages, with traffic backed up around Wimborne by an eight-month programme to refurbish Canford Bridge.

The bridge was reduced to single lane traffic on Wednesday and will be closed to cars completely for four months from June. The Victorian water crossing is the major link between Wimborne and Poole.

Middlehill Road is popular with commuters travelling from Ringwood and its environs seeking to avoid Wimborne town centre on their way to Blandford, Dorchester, and council HQ in Furzehill.

Dorset County Council has pledged to remain flexible on the introduction of its traffic calming measures to Colehill.
