A MAN has been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder after two people were found with stab wounds in Southbourne.

Police were called to Burleigh Road at 7.50pm on Friday following reports of a disturbance.

They found a man and a woman with stab wounds. Both were taken to hospital for treatment.

A second man, aged 48, was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder and is assisting officers with enquiries.

A cordon was set up at two addresses to allow officers to investigate the scene and enquiries are still going on.

Residents reported seeing a large police presence in the road on Friday night, with at least six police cars and an ambulance. There were also reports of armed police.

Speaking to the Daily Echo the following day, one resident said she was “very much shocked” by the incident as it was “normally a quiet road”.

“I didn’t realise what was happening until the police knocked on my door,” she said. “I’ve lived here around 20 years, and I’ve never heard of an incident like this.”

She added the man and woman who were stabbed are believed to be mother and son.

“I hope they’re both ok. The police asked if I could look after the woman’s dog while she’s in hospital.”

Another resident, who also preferred to stay anonymous, said he was shocked by what had happened.

“It’s absolutely awful. It’s normally such a quiet, normal area here so this is out of the blue,” he said.

“I saw the armed police arrived at around 8pm. There were at least seven or eight cars. I’ve never seen that many on this street before.

Officers have been making door-to-door enquiries since the incident.

“The police were asking if I had seen or heard anything, but I didn’t know anything was going on,” the resident added.
