THOUSANDS of sun worshippers flocked to Bournemouth as the heatwave continued across Dorset.

Despite the Met Office issuing the first new-style weather warning for thunderstorms, crowds crammed onto the sands to enjoy the sun and sea.

Ice cream and food kiosks saw building queues, with visitors also enjoying the Lower Gardens as well.

And as June came to a sweltering end, Bournemouth weather enthusiast Jim Smith said the first month of summer was the driest he has recorded in his records going back to 1996.

Just 2.4mm of rainfall was recorded, he said, with the average around 52mm.

It was also the warmest in at least 23 years, he said, with a mean temperature of around 17.4C.

This week will stay warm, with temperatures around 25C. 

Those attending the Dorset Rainbow Run at Upton Country Park were pelted with paint as they completed the course on Sunday.

And the Macmillan Dorset Bike Ride celebrated their 30th anniversary at their event on Sunday, with hundreds of riders taking part in the event to raise money for the cancer charity.

In Southbourne, the Shake and Stir Festival kept the town buzzing all weekend, with a host of performances and dancing and revelry.

Crowds lined the streets for the 'best ever' Winton Carnival on Saturday morning. And leading the procession in a Rolls Royce was 92-year-old carnival queen Sheila Sandison.

And fans of folk music enjoyed a free music festival on Poole Quay on Saturday.

Crowds enjoyed a number of award-winning folk acts on outdoor stages, as well as street ceilidhs.
