Roadworks which caused severe delays around Purbeck on Saturday have been abandoned.

Wessex Water have suspended works on the A351 Sandford Road after motorists were stuck for more than an hour on the road.

The work also caused a longer wait on Sandbanks Ferry and surrounding routes.

The work was to repair the road following a burst water main earlier this month.

Motorists were asked to allow extra time for journeys to Purbeck or use the A352.

But after a morning of delays and complaints from drivers, the temporary traffic lights were removed for the rest of the weekend.

Workers were able to leave the road in a safe condition, Travel Dorset said.

Traffic was especially bad on the southbound carriageway to Wareham.
