AN unexploded bomb was found in the New Forest on Friday night.

Emergency services rushed to an area of open heathland between Beaulieu and Dibden Purlieu following the discovery.

The device is believed to date from the First World War.

A spokesman for Hampshire Fire and Rescue Service described it as a 'historical un-exploded ordnance'.

Police officers, firefighters from Redbridge, Beaulieu, Winchester and Tottonand the Explosive Ordnance Disposal team (EOD) were called to the scene at around 3pm.

The area remained cordoned off until 8.25pm.

Police said no roads were closed and no homes were evacuated but the public was advised to avoid the area.

A spokeswoman for Hampshire Police confirmed the EOD team removed the bomb and emergency services left the scene at around 8.30pm.
